Hospice Volunteers contribute in a variety of ways... PATIENT CARE VOLUNTEER You will provide needed services to patient and families in nursing homes, assisted living centers, or at home in the community. These services may include companionship, helping homebound patients with shopping or other errands, reading to the visually impaired, offering emotional support, caregiver respite, and other needs as requested. The roles are as varied as the needs of our patients and families, and as diverse as the special gifts our Volunteers have to offer. BEREAVEMENT VOLUNTEER West River Care offers grief counseling and support to surviving loves ones for thirteen months after the patient's death. Bereavement Volunteers contribute by communicating with the surviving family members of patients to provide comfort, support, and education on the grief process. Bereavement Volunteers receive additional training on grief and loss, over and above the comprehensive training we offer to all Volunteers. ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES VOLUNTEER There are many opportunities for Volunteers who want to support West River Care but prefer to do so “behind the scenes.” Administrative Services Volunteers help out by stuffing envelopes, answering phones, assisting with filing, and other special projects as needed. How much time is involved? We work around your availability and your schedule with work, school, family, etc. The typical commitment is 1 – 2 hours per week. Will West River Care provide training? All Volunteers will be provided with comprehensive hospice training. Specialty Training and Continuing Education are offered to Volunteers. To learn more, please call 781-707-9580, or e-mail info@westrivercare.com. Many Hospice Volunteers describe their experiences as “rewarding”, “uplifting”, even “life-changing.” Is there an age requirement? Most Volunteers are at least 21 years of age, particularly our Patient Care Volunteers. Volunteers under 21 will be evaluated on an individual basis. A high level of emotional maturity is required for Volunteering with Hospice patients and families. Adolescent Volunteers are always welcome to help out with special, office-based projects, but we cannot accept any Volunteers under the age of 16. In all cases, Volunteers under 18 must have permission from a parent or guardian. How frequently and where are the training programs offered? The West River Care Training Programs are offered at least quarterly at our offices in Needham Heights and West Springfield. What is it like being a West River Care Volunteer? Many Volunteers describe their experiences as “rewarding”, “uplifting”, even “life-changing.” Opportunities to make a major difference in people's lives abound, and our patients and families are enormously grateful for everything our Volunteers do for them. I am interested. What do I do? Take the first step and call us today! Click below to submit a Volunteer Application in your area... Thank you very much! We hope to hear from you soon.
